The government today announced a new £5 million support package for public works and small businesses in South Wiltshire. Well, that’s nice of them. It’s good to see money going to Wessex for a change, instead of London and its immediate surroundings. The reason for this largesse? The two novichok attacks which were undoubtedly carried out by the Russians, both of them, purely coincidentally, close to the government’s Porton Down research station.
It seems the way to get government money for Wessex is to be attacked by a hostile foreign power (according to the official explanation). That is, at least, until we get our own parliament with tax-raising powers.
